Redefining New Year fitness with intention, not overload.
For immediate release: Washington, D.C. —January 2026— January shows up with optimism. New year energy. Fresh possibilities. The belief that this could finally be the year things change. And every year, people respond to that optimism the same way: by adding more.
More workouts. More structure. More goals. More commitments. More pressure to transform.
We add healthier meals, more family time, more career focus, more boundaries, more growth. Somewhere along the way, transformation becomes a list instead of a direction. According to Gerard “Coach G” Burley, founder of Sweat DC (BS Sports Medicine University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, MS, CSCS, NASM-PES, SSE, AENC) this pattern is exactly what the future of fitness needs to move away from.
“You can only receive what you actually have space for,” Burley said. “The work is identifying your one true priority and protecting it. Look inside before you look outside. Remove more than you add.”
As the fitness industry looks toward 2026, Sweat DC is advocating for a more intentional, sustainable relationship with movement — one that respects the body’s limits and prioritizes clarity over excess.
“Most people don’t need more motivation,” Burley said. “They need clarity. Not more goals, but priority. Not more opportunity, but discernment.”
Rather than encouraging people to stack more onto already-full lives, Sweat DC is challenging the traditional New Year mindset. Burley believes real transformation doesn’t start with adding — it starts with removing.
This winter, Sweat DC is inviting people to consider a different approach: a season of no. No to what drains you. No to what distracts you. No to what looks good on paper but doesn’t feel right in your body.
“You don’t have unlimited energy. You have one hundred percent — that’s it. Not one hundred and twenty. Not grind harder and magically find more. When you try to pour more into a cup that’s already full, something spills. Usually it’s your peace, your consistency, or your health.”
As part of its continued expansion, Sweat DC will open a new location in Shaw in March 2026, further strengthening its presence across Washington, D.C. and Baltimore and bringing its purpose-driven approach to movement to even more people. “SWEAT is about creating space,” Burley said. “Space to move, to breathe, and to show up as yourself. That’s the future of fitness — and that’s what we’re building.”
