Sweat DC doubles down on purpose—mental and the ultimate anti-aging tool.
For Immediate Release: Washington, D.C. Sweat DC is shining a light on the healing power of movement, and how strength training can transform not just the body, but the mind.
For Gerard “Coach G” Burley, founder of Sweat DC, this message is deeply personal. His mother, Henrietta Burley, was the foundation of his family: strong, selfless, and resilient. When she passed away suddenly from congestive heart failure just one week before he left for college, everything changed.
“My mom gave everything to everyone else and put her own health last,” said Coach G. “I wanted to create a space that could have saved her life, a place where an Olympic athlete and a working mom could stand side by side, both feeling seen, supported, and strong.”
Growing up in West Baltimore, Coach G knew what it felt like to be different, an overweight gay Black boy searching for confidence and belonging. He found both in movement. When he lost his mom, fitness became his sanctuary, a way to grieve, rebuild, and find purpose. That experience inspired him to launch SWEAT DC in 2015, first as a pop-up with nothing but a speaker and a dream. Today, it’s a thriving community across D.C. and Baltimore, known for its inclusive strength and conditioning programs designed for all fitness levels.
“Movement saved my life,” said Coach G. “It gave me confidence, peace, and family. That’s what SWEAT is about, showing up for yourself, knowing you’re enough, and finding strength in community.”
Studies show that exercise can be more effective than anxiety medication in improving mental health, and strength training helps keep the body young, improving muscle, bone, and confidence at every age. SWEAT DC embodies that science with soul, proving that when we move with purpose, we move toward healing.
“SWEAT is a reflection of love,” said Coach G. “It’s for anyone who’s ever felt unseen, for anyone who needs a reminder that they belong. My mom’s strength lives in this community every single day.”
